Staff Experiences

“My favorite part of working with Bartleby has to be the many interactions it gave me with other people. Working with such an enthusiastic staff and collaborating with different groups across campus was fantastic and I am happy to now call many of these people friends. If I had to think of one specific instance that will stick with me forever, it would have to be the night of our release event. Being able to hand someone a physical copy of a book that has their name and their work in it and getting to see their reaction was truly priceless—my eyes water just thinking about those moments.”

— Sean McNutt, Senior Managing Editor (2023-2024)

“Working with Bartleby has been a blast. I’m so happy to have a community of people who love reading and writing stories as much as I do. Over the last 3 years working in the Poetry and Fiction sections, I’ve had the unique opportunity to improve as a writer by reading pieces from many people’s different perspectives. It feels less like work and more like something I really want to do.”

— Liz Weir, Fiction Editor (2023-2024)

“I’m Poetry Section Editor for Bartleby and this is my second year doing it, third year on staff. I have been so happy to be in a writing and arts environment because amid a STEM major, it is hard to find a space that nurtures my passion for poetry. It’s fun getting to meet other writers and artists, all while putting together this magazine that represents the creative works at UMBC. If I could improve my experience any, then I would say that I wish I had found Bartleby my freshman year!”

— Samantha Herath, Poetry Editor (2016-2017)

“This is not my first experience working on the staff of a student publication, but it is definitely the most rewarding one. Bartleby meant a great deal to me as a sophomore eager to submit to the creative arts journal, and now to be a part of the process that once reviewed my poetry for publication is fantastic. I feel like my work matters and that my ideas are heard as we move forward with the next volume.”

— Caleb Metcalf, Poetry Reviewer (2016-2017)

“Working on Bartleby has been such a joy. Being on staff has been a great way to interact with the creative community here on campus, and to sharpen my critical response skills. As a reviewer of fiction and non-fiction, I was exposed to a broad range of works, all submitted by members of our diverse student body. Collaborating with fellow staff members to select pieces for the 2015 journal was fun, challenging, and enriching. Overall, participating as a member of Bartleby has been one of my favorite undergraduate experiences. It’s my recommendation that students interested in the creative arts should get involved — or, at the very least, submit!”

— Kate Edwards, Publicity & Social Media Director (2014-2015)
