Bartleby Submission Guidelines

Do you want to submit to the Bartleby? Read through this!

Hello everyone!

Do you want to submit to the 2022 Edition of Bartleby? If so, submissions are due in just a little under two weeks, so here are Bartleby's submission guidelines so you can know what we want for submitted pieces.

We are accepting submissions from current UMBC students until 11:59pm on Wednesday, December 1st, 2021. All pieces submitted from before the deadline will be considered for the 2022 edition. Any submissions on December 2nd or later will be carried over for consideration in the 2023 edition. All submission must be electronically emailed to bartleby@umbc.edu by the deadline for consideration. Each piece should be included as a separate attachment. If multiple written pieces or visual pieces are on the same attached document, they will be considered as one work. Additionally, name the file you submit as the title you wish for the piece to be published under. For example, if you were to submit a visual art piece titled "Roses" but is submitted as "rosesbw-1.png", it will be published as "rosesbw-1". A submission's filename should be "[Piece Title].[File Extension]". Additionally, do not include your name and email in the piece title or body. We ask this so that our reviews of pieces can be unbiased and as neutral as possible. When submitting, be sure to include what section you are submitting to in the email header.

Written pieces in the poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction sections should be emailed as Word Documents (.doc or .docx). Poems of any length are accepted, however one author may only submit up to 8 poems each year for consideration. If more than 8 poems are submitted, only the first 8 submissions will be considered. Fiction and Creative Nonfiction pieces should be on a double-spaced Word Document and should be less than 10,000 words in length.

Visual art pieces should be submitted as one of the following filetypes: .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, .png, .tff, or .pdf. All art pieces must be at most 8.5"x11" and cannot exceed a filesize of 8 MB. We cannot print any images that are less than 300 dpi (equal to 300 ppi). Make sure the artwork is at least 300 dpi prior to submitting.

All pieces that are submitted to Bartleby are eligible for annual cash prizes, both through Bartleby and through UMBC's English department. Bartleby awards each section winner in all four categories a $100 prize. Bartleby section winners are picked by Bartleby staff, and as such Bartleby staff members cannot be selected as the section winner for a section. The English Department also presents the Malcolm C. Braly Award for fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction each year. All written pieces accepted into the Bartleby journal will be automatically up for consideration for the Malcolm C. Braly Award. The Bartleby section winner awards are presented at the journal launch, whereas the Malcolm C. Braly Awards are presented on UMBC's Student Recognition Day.

When pieces are accepted into the Bartleby journal, if the author chooses to publish, Bartleby is granted one-time publishing rights for the piece in the upcoming annual issue of the jorunal. In addition, Bartleby reserves the right to reproduce any accepted pieces for promotional work, such as on promotional posters and flyers and social media postings, as well as for any Bartleby anthologies of previous work. Outside of these circumstances, the author maintains all rights to their works for future reproduction or submission for further publications.

For any further questions, please email either sivenl317@umbc.edu or bartleby@umbc.edu. Be sure to submit soon and good luck to everyone submitting!
